A lot of players, especially new folks that haven't had the chance to get a grasp on the trading side of the game, tend to make the mistake of deliberately farming for a specific material, as opposed to farming for gold to then buy said material. The fact of the matter is that you are much better off dedicating some of your time towards earning gold to *then* purchase what material it is that you are looking to get for yourself, as opposed to specifically farming for that material. You'll find that doing just this ends up being a lot more time-efficient, although, of course, it does require trading.
In this video, I will demonstrate this notion by first farming namira's rot in Blackreach, and then farming powdered mother of pearl in Summerset. I will then spend an equivalent amount of time farming for gold by merely participating in some of my favourite ESO activities that happen to be pretty financially rewarding! We will see which of the two different strategies will provide me with more mushrooms and pearls!
