New Covid strain: South Africa travel should be halted, recommends European Commission

Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission’s president, said the EU must crackdown on air travel from South Africa to contain the new mutant variant, reports Joe Barnes.

The EU's top officials called for flights to be ban from the region where the new strain originated and also promised to slap new rules on people arriving from southern African countries.

In a statement, she said: “We are taking the news about the new highly mutated Covid variant very seriously.

"We do know that mutations could lead to the emergence and spread of even more concerning variants of the virus that could spread worldwide within a few months.
