The 126-year-old dam in Kerala’s Idukki district was built by the British and is presently operated by Tamil Nadu. While it is a lifeline for Tamil Nadu’s farmers in its southern districts, Kerala fears that the dam poses a threat to its residents. Kerala has been demanding that the existing Mullaperiyar dam be decommissioned and a new one be built. But will a new dam serve the interests of both Tamil Nadu and Kerala? Or is there an alternative solution to the long-running dispute?
