Two groups of people locked in an altercation over a move of some Hindus to establish a puja mandap on a property at Tipu Sultan Road at Wari in Dhaka on Monday.
A group of people of the local Hindu community came to the property in the morning to set up a puja mandap for Durga Puja, the biggest religious festival of the Bengali Hindu community that began on Monday with Maha Shasthi Puja. They said that there was a temple on the property with a number of buildings, which house business establishments, years ago and they wanted to offer puja there again.
They said that they offered puja there in 2010 but the police and the administration were barring them from offering puja this year.
Some local residents protested at the move of the group, saying that there was never a Hindu temple on the property.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Wari division deputy commissioner Shah Iftekhar Ahmed said that they inquired of the Dhaka district administration about the property and found that the 24-decimal property was disputed. Of the property, an area of 16 decimals is vested property under the Dhaka district administration and there is a legal dispute over the rest eight decimals. Around 30 people took lease of the property from the Dhaka district administration and started business there.
