Sonu Sood who has been hailed as the messiah of migrants for his charity work during the COVID crisis in India is now in big trouble.
The Income Tax officers raided as many as six locations linked to the actor in a massive IT raid that started last night and went on for hours until this morning. Sources said the Income Tax department is investigating Sonu Sood's property deal with a Lucknow-based real estate companym which is under the scanner. The IT raid happened after there were allegations of tax evasion on this deal, according to sources.
Opposition parties have called it a witch-hunt against the 48-year-old actor, who has been praised for helping thousands of migrants in Mumbai. The raids come days after Sonu's recent meeting with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who declared him brand ambassador for a "Desh ka Mentors" programme for school students. This meeting spurred rumours of a political debut for Sonu, perhaps in next year's Punjab election as an Aam Aadmi Party candidate.
But Sonu Sood said no politics was discussed in the meeting and the BJP has also denied that the raids were driven by politics.
