White House snubbed Tesla - America's biggest electric vehicle company, from its EV event!

As the United States government continues its monumental push of domestic automakers to transition to electrification, President Joe Biden and fellow White House staff have invited 3 carmaker companies Washington to discuss what steps can be taken at the federal level to reach lofty EV delivery goals. However, perhaps the Biden Administration’s biggest ally, Tesla, wasn’t there because it was not extended an invitation. Considering that Tesla commands the majority of the US’ electric vehicle sector and the fact that the Model 3 has been dubbed as the Most American Car in the country today, the absence of the EV maker was very noticeable. Even Tesla CEO Elon Musk remarked on Twitter that it did seem pretty odd that Tesla was not invited at all. When asked about this issue, the Transport Secretary noted that he was not sure why Tesla was not invited, but he could say that there are many leaders now in the EV industry.
“I’m not sure. But what I know is that you are seeing so many leaders in the industry. You got newer companies, and you got the legacy companies that are both saying that we’ve got to move in this direction. The industry structure obviously is complex, and part of what’s exciting is to see some of the oldest, most traditional names in US auto manufacturing, and some of the newest companies on the scene, all acting in terms of the very core of their business to go electric.”
There are some automakers also left out are Nissan Motor Co., whose Leaf was a pioneer in electric cars, Honda Motor Co., the first Japanese automaker to promise to phase out gasoline-powered cars, and Volkswagen AG, which is spending $41 billion on electrification R&D, partly as penance for a diesel cheating scandal. Toyota Motor Co., which developed the top-selling hybrid car in the form of the Prius, was also absent.

Effectively, a game plan is likely being discussed among the White House staff and the leaders of the automakers who were invited to the event. With each company outlining specific goals through various announcements over the past several years, it is now time for action. The thing about electrification is that it is vastly different from building an ICE car, which each of these companies has a long and successful history of doing. Building an electric vehicle is a completely different project, and it goes much further than putting some electric motors and batteries in a pack and calling it an EV. There needs to be efficient and effective software, the batteries need to have specific cell chemistry to operate for a long time, charging infrastructures need to be established, along with many other factors.
