They are literally skin and bones.
No fat. No muscle mass. We weren’t sure how they were even standing up. They arrived at the Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County dehydrated and ravenous, and our medical team immediately rushed to their aid.
These poor pups didn’t get this way overnight. They had been suffering for weeks, if not months.
Sadly, their owner was placed in a long-term care facility, and the person left in charge was not able to properly care for the dogs due to mental limitations. Fortunately, a Good Samaritan sent a picture of one of the emaciated dogs to the Tacoma Police Department, who responded quickly to remove and bring them to our shelter.
Not every dog in this situation makes it out alive.
Max, Winston, and Scooby are dangerously thin and would not have survived much longer without our help. Scooby is missing his two front teeth, and the surrounding teeth are broken, leading us to believe he was desperately trying to eat any objects he could find – possibly even rocks. The dogs have significant hair loss, skin infections, parasites, and toenails that have grown so long it is painful to walk.
It is heartbreaking to see the pain on their faces, knowing the horror they have been through. But these sweet dogs are finally safe and in a place where they can get the care they deserve.
Our medical team has started them on a monitored refeeding program to help them safely gain weight and are under close supervision by our expert veterinarians. Medication will heal their infections, and carefully applied lotion has helped soothe their itchy skin. Our staff and volunteers are working to gain their trust, assure them they are safe now, and teaching them what it’s like to be loved again. We’re making them as comfortable as we can with soft blankets and plenty of fresh water.
They are not out of the woods yet. Their condition is fragile, and we’re taking things day by day.
We are committed to doing everything we can for these dogs. But we cannot do it alone.
We need your support to help them fight this battle and give them a chance for a better life. Please make a donation today, for Max, Winston, and Scooby, and for all pets who come to us scared, suffering, and in need of a miracle. thehumanesociety.org/3-neglected-dogs
