Retailer prepares for shoppers 'wardrobe refresh'

(20 Jul 2021) The president of Nordstrom department stores describes how the retailer is reacting to their customers' desire for a "wardrobe refresh" as COVID restrictions ease and shoppers begin to think about going back to the office.

"I think that there's a there's a big demand out there for people to really go through their closets and kind of reinvent how they want to how they want to look over the next couple of seasons," Jamie Nordstrom, told the Associated Press.

Over the past year and a half, people who were forced to work from home due to the pandemic lockdowns opted for a more casual wardrobe.

"I think as people start to return to work and return to more normal routines, they want to keep that comfort," Nordstrom said.

"So I think we are going to see continued casualization of the country."

Business is picking up, according to the great-grandson of Nordstrom founder John W. Nordstrom.

Starting in states that were the first to easy Covid restrictions, Nordstrom was able to open stores in more and more locations.

"I think customers, as they're getting out, they want to see their friends and they want to go have a cool experience," Nordstrom said. "Our restaurants are really starting to do a lot more business."

The Seattle-based company plans to move masks off the retail floor as they shift their focus to their customers changing shopping habits.

"We are scrambling to get after what the new suit is,' Nordstrom said. "It may not be the same suit that it was."

Fourteen year old Thalya Suares is visiting New York City with her family from the Caribbean island of Curaçao. Thalya is anxious to upgrade her style.

"In the Caribbean, there was also a lockdown, so I just wore my clothes from my house and like just my old clothes," Thalya said.

"I like it very much that the stores reopen again," Franklin Suares said calling in store shopping "an experience."

Marina Gregorio, visiting from Brazil, admitted to shopping online during her pandemic lockdown. "But it's not the same as going in the store and checking if you really like it and checking if it really fits," Gregorio said.
